Between the periods of 1885 to 1906, the federal government alongside local governments had tried to acquire the rich farmlands that were originally allotted to the Kahkewistahaw band in 1881. In the winter of 1907, tainted dealings and unscrupulous tactics were used to achieve one of the most unjust Land Surrenders in Canadian history. 96 years later mixed with 30 years of in-depth investigation uncovered exactly what happened before the surrender, thus leading to Saskatchewan’s largest, and one of Canada’s largest, Land Surrender settlements, at the time. The formula used to obtain the land from Kahkewistahaw would be echoed across western Canada, and to this day remains the primary archetype to major land surrender cases.
